A Blast from the Past, but never more relevant.
As I new Vet graduated in the 1990’s I remember ‘Rafoxinide’ being an effective fluke drench for sheep. It was available in the UK in the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s, until it’s its licence ended.
It has been in the back of my mind, sometimes getting near the front as a ‘maybe big G Shepherd product’ but then going back into the murky fog of my skull.
Anyway, I am glad to say that some committed folk have put time, money and effort in to obtaining a UK Marketing Authorisation for it once more.
This is very important now, due to the widespread resistance to some other active ingredients such as Triclabendazole.
Rafoxinide has benefitted from not being used for a long time and should only now be used as part of a planned program to maintain its effectiveness and to prolong the effectiveness of other flukicides.
How effective is Rafoxanide?
Recent research showed it to be 100% effective against immature liver fluke at both the 6 week and 8 week stages and also in the older and adult fluke.
It is not a new group, just a different flukicide that shares the same group but so far is showing higher effectiveness.
Further information from myself.
